The Adornment of Godly Character

This month, I took a seminary class titled “Hermeneutics to Exposition.” Each student was tasked with a passage of Scripture to faithfully exegete and exposit the Word.
Now, I should add an important caveat—while I don’t believe women are called to pastoral ministry (1 Timothy 2:12), I do believe it’s deeply important for women to know how to study Scripture faithfully and be equipped to teach (Titus 2:3–5, Proverbs 31:26). I truly believe all believers are called to teach biblically, each according to their unique gifting and capacity. With that, I was quite excited for this assignment— an opportunity to apply all of the theological groundwork we’ve been building this year.
I chose to study and teach 1 Peter 3:1–6. This passage, specifically verses 3-4, focus on internal versus external beauty and is one I reference often in my current ministry walking alongside women navigating acne through lighthearted social media, where God has graciously allowed me to encourage those struggling with their skin. I have used 1 Peter 3:3-4 many times, but I realized I hadn’t fully slowed down to study it in its proper context. This assignment became that opportunity.
And let me tell you… it changed so much. The context brings about the true exegetical meaning of the verses, while also reinforcing that the core principles remain the same. I took away a lot, but ultimately chose to focus on three characteristics of a godly woman for this message—truths that apply to every season of life and that we are all called to live out faithfully.
I pray this message encourages you, as well as welcome any feedback!! I feel a strong desire to continue speaking and teaching in women’s ministry wherever the Lord opens doors, so any input is a gift as I grow in this pursuit.
